The early grunge movement, also referred to as the "Seattle sound," started with the underground music scene in Seattle. Their lyrics were always clever, and always paired with addictively-good riffs and melodies. Three of their songs were included in Rolling Stone Magazines list of the 500 songs that shaped rock n roll. They had an eclectic musical style that incorporated elements of jazz, rap, and disco. Often considered an example of blue-eyed soul, the group was charismatic and almost endearingly square. Heavy metal spread its wings globally in the '80s. They dont make new bands like they did 80s rock bands. Their 1987 album Darklands remains one of the best of the decade, with haunting vocals, alluring melodies, and an almost disarming sincerity. The music industry was rescued from its economic crisis by the development in the 1980s of a new technology, digital recording.
