A lot of us are ride or die and are ready to hop on and help you with the ship, without needing a slice of the ownership. Exactly an employee delivering nothing can be fired, and a vendor or tradesperson or whatnot can be taken to small claims court or regular civil court. Ive been a senior level HR leader for years; my spouse owned a separate company for years. One of my OHs favourite hobbies is reading the negative reviews for objectively good things. I would much rather work for a successful business, the raises and bonuses are much better and the atmosphere is usually way less toxic. Highly disagree. But it is an aspect *of the business,* and asking the employees to buy into the emotional aspects of your business plan isnt a thing unless theyre going to get some kind of actual ownership. And they just cant wrap their head around it when the employees dont show the same passion and gusto. Dont make a choice, then get mad at other people because you made that choice and they dont fawn over you for it. Like so many things in life, this is only a zero-sum game if you make it one. I have friends who have started their own small businesses, and I could not emotionally handle the risk intrinsic in entrepreneurship. But, the emotional (and sometimes physical) burden is there. Odds are that most of his staff are showing up and doing the job hes paying them to do, and a small handful are the headaches. Yes, you personally and financially sacrifice. But its not enough to have good intentions. Im just amazed by this letter. It broke when I used it for that. But my business was my LIFE and my business was their JOB. If you are surrounded by angry employees, either youre hiring the wrong people or you are treating them poorly in some way that youre dismissing. I cant help but feel thats whats happening here. Labor laws arent just there for employees benefit they prevent shady businesses from getting too much of an edge over honest ones. I actually had someone who got mad a me for not saying, good job, employee, when all they did was something that was in their day-to-day job description. My work group works so hard to keep our noses above water, but our group has been cut and and cut and cut to the point that we can barely keep up. The upshot is, expecting people over whom you have power to validate what youre doing is what leads to actual exploitation, because youre creating an environment where its unlikely people are going to be able to honest with you or be able to appropriate fulfill the employee role.
