There was a log message about kexts which it hung on for a minute or so, but then it finally restarted. The machine now seems to be running fine after restoring to the time just prior to the upgrade. Because of all the mentions of the /usr/local directory above, I then opened up the terminal program to see what was in my own /usr/local directory, and found that my machine does not have one! Mine was stuck at Less than a minute remaining. I've been waiting for more than 30 mins and it's been stuck there. I have installed Texlive and many other programs. SAY NO TO YOSEMITE!!!! Its obvious that not every person is experiencing these problems, which always indicates that its user specific, so clean up your computer regularly is the key. **But, Im tenacious if nothing, and like cars, I will run something I buy into the ground until it never works at all to get every last drop of life out of it. There should have been a warning before pressing restart required that a backup should be done (time machine has refused to do a backup for over two months) and an advisement to NOT hard reboot. The solution to this is incredibly simple; wait it out. Then it hung on the gray screen with the apple and the progress bar. But, wait a minute this dark gray is familiar, the Mac does it before it starts the sign on screen. Now I dunno what to do cos I need to work with this laptop, should I restart or should I wait ? Theres also ability to restart, start up disk, shut down THEN I get a menu to automatically restart or press the button to restart and so I just wait it keeps cycling several times then just now restarted on its own & NOW its loading with apple background white screen progress bar slowly moving along. Ha. When I typed CMD-L, I got a spinning beach ball cursor for a few minutes, but then the log finally appeared. Then I went back into the App Stores upgrade page and restarted the 10.10.2 upgrade. However when I restarted the computer after a few hours of use, and restarted it again, it went to the install screen (apple icon on the gray background with the install meter/line showing) it took longer than the normal to restart but it did restart and everything seemed to be working. Same behavior for both upgrade attempts: Upgrade downloads from App Store, license agreement and so on goes fine, loads the updates and then after the restart, the bar progresses for a while and it hangs on a grey screen with the international no symbol (Circle with line through it). It got stuck and continuously went from 22 to 21 minutes for about half an hour but now is hopefully moving along! It got to where in recovery when I tried to reinstall Big Sur it wouldnt let me connect to WiFi and was giving me a Keychain System cannot be found to store [wifi username] error. Just attempted to upgrade from Mountain Lion to Yosemite on a 2010 iMac via App Store. It took 3 hours to get passed the 1 minute remaining screen but Yosemite looks cool! The rest of the world releases software in BETA when they are testing! I did that before without success, but this time it seemed to work.
