We are moved to some fine action, we are moved to the abandoning of some weakness or habit, we are moved to say something to someone, some word of sympathy, or warning, or encouragement; but the moment passes, and the thing is never done, the evil thing is never conquered, the word is never spoken. Because of the apparently stern and unsympathetic character of this saying different explanations have been given of it. So to this approach of the leper there came the reaction of Jesus. In the end of this chapter (15) is another miracle of Christ's feeding a vast multitude. The Jordan valley makes a deep cleft in the surface of the earth, and the Sea of Galilee is part of that cleft. A fish was the last being for man to make his banker of; with God all things are possible, who knew how to blend admirably in the same act divine glory, unanswerably vindicated, with the lowliest grace in man. Shall be cast out into outer darkness - This is an image of future punishment. They are the circumstances that preceded the discourse upon the mount, as given in Matthew 5:1-48; Matthew 6:1-34; Matthew 7:1-29. They were specially dangerous in the midday heat, and between sunset and sunrise. Here the obvious illusion is to Gehenna hell, a theme Jesus addresses at various times in his public ministry (Matthew 13:42; Matthew 13:50; Matthew 22:13; Matthew 24:51; Matthew 25:30, Luke 13:2). When you look at man around you today, you do not see God's intent when he said "Let us make man in our image and after our likeness"( Genesis 1:26 ) because we look around at a fallen world and we see fallen man and we cannot understand God's original intent as we look at the world today. Here was no publicity; here there was no crowd to look and to admire and to be astonished. WebEcclesiastes 12. Here is a prophecy of the appearing of John the Baptist. This led them to write the Gentiles out of the kingdom despite these prophecies. Do you know what your guilt will be, you "subject of the kingdom," if you perish after a Christian mother's prayers and tears have fallen on you? Jesus indicates exactly the opposite. I. Men came from the east and west, when the Gentiles were admitted into the Church of Christ. He is a hardened person. He was always making some disturbance wherever he went. Jesus knew that in no other way could he ever convince these two men that they were in fact cured. Our Lord then answers, with perfect dignity, as well as grace; He puts before the disciples of John the real state of the case; He furnishes them with plain, positive facts, that could leave nothing to be desired by John's mind when he weighed all as a testimony from God. Christ gives us here an idea, First, of the persons that shall be saved; many from the east and the west: he had said (Matthew 7:14; Matthew 7:14), Few there be that find the way of life; and yet here many shall come.
