Wesley LeRoy Van Kooten was born on October 16, 1946. He went to be with his Lord on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at the age 75. Wes was born to Gerrit and Durkey (Lanser) Van Kooten, the youngest of ten children. He grew up on a farm east of Leighton, Iowa and attended school through eighth grade at Leighton Christian School and Pella Christian Grade School. He began working at Brummel Brothers in Leighton at the age of sixteen and delivered feed for ten years. Eventually, he began raising hogs south of Leighton and later began farming.
While attending a Leighton Christian Reformed Church all-request church program, Wes met Junella Mae Van Engelenhoven. After one year of dating, they married on February 28, 1964, at the home of his parents. They were married for 58 years. To this union were born four children: Leland, Ivan, Davona, and Daren. The family resided in the Leighton area where they raised the family in the fear of the Lord. They were faithful members of Leighton Christian Reformed Church.
Farming was Wes’ passion. He took pride in a well-cared for farmstead and a line of green machinery. While he kept busy on the farm, Wes made relationships happen right along with the work. Wesley L.
